Federal officials are looking into an auto product defect involving Hyundai Motor Company’s 2011 Sonata sedan. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, safety regulators with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) believe that the Sonata may have steering problems. So far, no accidents, injuries or fatalities have been reported in connection with these vehicle defects. The problem may have affected more than 16,000 Sonata sedans manufactured in the company’s United States facilities in Alabama.

Rubicelia Santacruz-Alvarado, 33, was critically injured and her 2-year-old daughter, Samantha Bermudez, was killed, in a rollover accident the afternoon of August 28, 2010. Police say the tread of the right rear tire of the van separated causing the driver, 37-year-old Alberto Santacruz, to lose control of the van. He and his son, 6-year-old Larry Bermudez, suffered minor injuries. Police say Santacruz-Alvarado was holding her daughter in her lap. Neither of them was buckled up, officials said.

A 79-year-old man was killed and five people were injured in a San Bernardino car accident, which officials say, occurred after the tread separated from a rear tire of an SUV. According to a news report in The San Bernardino County Sun, the fatal rollover crash occurred the night of August 30, 2010 on the eastbound 40 Freeway near Kelbaker Road, in Ludlow. As soon as the tire tread separation occurred, the SUV went out of control and rolled over several times. An elderly passenger sustained fatal injuries while five others were transported to area hospitals for treatment of injuries.

Lynn Le, 77, was killed in a Los Angeles car accident after she lost control of her car and crashed the morning of August 28, 2010. According to a news report in The San Gabriel Valley Tribune, the fatal crash occurred on Colima Road at Camino Del Sur in Hacienda Heights when Le’s 1997 Honda Accord went over a raised concrete divider, continued into southbound traffic and crashed into a cinder block wall. Officials say Le was driving about 60 mph at the time of the crash. The San Gabriel Valley Tribune reports that it is not known what caused the Honda to veer into oncoming traffic. An investigation is ongoing.

New updates in the salmonella egg contamination outbreak was announced. Yesterday, the ABC World News reported a shocking update regarding the federal inspection of an Iowa farm for possible salmonella contaminated eggs.
